The Practicums that are offered through the Faculty of Kinesiology have been one of my favourite parts of my undergraduate degree. It is great to see how the knowledge that we are learning in our courses is used in the real world and it is an awesome opportunity to get hands-on experience to learn about future careers.

Practicum overview
Students gain course credits and professional experience by taking a practicum.
It's a great way to gain insight into a potential career path and start building a professional network before graduation.
Are you an organization interested in providing students with work experience in the field of kinesiology through a practicum?
Practicum requirements
- must be a current UCalgary kinesiology major
- in good academic standing
- successful completion 20 courses (60 units) before applying; 10 courses (30 units) must be labelled KNES
- meet the practicum placement requirements described in the position description with no prior personal, work or volunteer relationship with the organization
- Practicums must be new to you to maximize learning
- Kinesiology students are permitted a maximum of one practicum in a term, a maximum of three practicums in their degree and may not repeat practicums with the same organization.
What will the practicum course entail?
- Complete the orientation quiz at the beginning of the term.
- Complete 60-72 hours within the term dates, and meet the expectations of the practicum position. Grading is CR/F and has no GPA weight.
- Complete a Future Skills Workbook
- Complete a mid-point evaluation with your on-site supervisor.
- Complete a final evaluation with your on-site supervisor.
How to enrol in a practicum course
The following steps are required to enroll in KNES 441, 443 or 445 practicum courses. Apply for only one practicum at a time.
Check the criteria
Review the list of practicums in Faculty of Kinesiology News D2L - Content - Faculty of Kinesiology 2026 Practicums, and ensure you meet the eligibility criteria (posted above) and the position criteria (posted in the PDF).
Email the on-site supervisor listed in the position description to arrange for an interview (June for Fall, October for Winter, February for Spring; unless otherwise noted).
Include an up-to-date resume and a targeted cover letter
A brief introduction to yourself in the body of the email
A concise reason why you're interested in the position
At the interview
Bring the following to the interview.
A current resume
Your term schedule and any personal scheduling so you can discuss availability
The practicum application with the student portion completed. If you're the successful candidate, the supervisor will complete their portion of the application form and return it to you.
Once a practicum application is signed with an organization, students must honour that commitment.
Register for the course
Students must submit the completed application to knespracticum@ucalgary.ca by the stated deadline. The advisors will review and email you to register in the practicum course. Next steps will be posted in the D2L shell. Late applications will not be permitted.
Fall 2026 (Sept 1 - Dec 4)
Contact the on-site supervisor after June 1.
Application and documents deadline is 11:59 pm on August 20.
Complete 5 - 6 hours per week within the term.
Winter 2027 (Jan 11 - April 13)
Email the on-site supervisor after October 1.
Application and documents deadline is 11:59 pm on January 7.
Complete 5-6 hours per week within the term.
Spring 2026 (May 4 - June 15)
Contact the on-site supervisor after February 1.
Application and documents deadline is 11:59 pm April 24.
Complete 10 - 12 hours per week within the term.
The kinesiology advisors must post permission for you to register in the practicum course once your completed application is submitted and approved by the advising office. Late applications will not be accepted. Contact us.
