EXCEL training pathway for QEP's in exercise oncology
Background:
- The EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living well (EXCEL) study provides a 12-week exercise program to those living with and beyond cancer in rural regions across Canada.
- EXCEL provides exercise oncology training to qualified exercise professionals (QEPs) across Canada.
- Training increases the number of community-based QEPs able to meet the unique needs of individuals living with and beyond cancer.

Participant-Oriented Research Approach to Support EXCEL
Background:
- The EXCEL (EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living well) study aims to reduce barriers faced by those living with cancer in rural and remote areas through online exercise delivery and community-based implementation.
- A participant-oriented research (POR) approach, including regular distribution of electronic quality improvement (QI) surveys and a participant advisory board (PAB), supports moving evidence to practice.

Interim Results and Program Satisfaction of the EXCEL Study
Exercise is a proven intervention for improving physical and psychosocial outcomes in individuals living with and beyond cancer. Yet, access to and support for behavior change remain limited, particularly in rural areas. This interim analysis evaluated EXCEL's effectiveness in improving patient-reported outcomes, physical functions, and program satisfaction among participants.

EXCEL Protocol
- Rural and remote cancer populations continue to face disproportionate barriers to exercise oncology resources.
- Building clinic-to-community pathways through the hub and spoke model supports exercise oncology as part of standard supportive cancer care.
- Building exercise into supportive cancer care will equip individuals with the resources to use exercise to enhance wellness, health, and overall quality of life.

First Year Implementation Results for EXCEL
- EXCEL has built a network of Qualified Exercise Professionals and Healthcare Providers to facilitate referral and program delivery
- The delivery and implementation of the EXCEL study in year one was considered feasible and safe
- This work provides insights into developing sustainable exercise oncology programming implementation for rural and remote populations

Exercise and behaviour change support for individuals living with and beyond cancer: Interim results and program satisfaction of the EXCEL study
This interim analysis fills an important gap in the current exercise oncology literature by addressing questions surrounding the effectiveness of online exercise on patient-reported and physical function outcomes that ultimately contribute to the health-related quality of individuals living with and beyond cancer.
First-Year Implementation of the EXCEL Study: Building Networks to Support Rural and Remote Community Access to Exercise Oncology Resources
The purpose of this analysis is to report on the first-year implementation of the EXCEL study as guided by the RE-AIM framework. This evaluation provides insight into EXCEL’s initial implementation efforts for QEP and HCP network development to support the delivery of the online exercise-oncology intervention.
