The Menstrual Health and Sport Participation Project

This study aims to explore the impact of menstrual health on sport participation and mental wellbeing in women and girls with intellectual disabilities (ID). Specifically, the study will investigate their knowledge and understanding of their menstrual health. The goal is not only to examine the menstrual health relationship with sport participation and mental well-being, but also to identify pedagogical approaches that can effectively support learning and empowerment in this population.

Study Measures and Objectives

The study objectives are to investigate knowledge and understanding of menstrual health in both Special Olympics athletes and women with IDD more generally, explore how knowledge and understanding of menstrual health may impact sport participation in this population and understanding the relationship between menstrual health, sport participation and mental wellbeing in Special Olympics athletes and women with ID.
