Evaluating an Ice-Skating Program for Children with ID

This project is focused on designing, implementing and evaluating an 8-week ice skating program for children with intellectual disabilities (ID).  Children with ID between the ages of 6 and 11 will be invited to participate in this study, where they will be paired up in a one-to-one ratio with an ice skating coach. The program will focus not only on skating, but also on physical literacy, building confidence, developing friendships, and creating a positive experience for each child.

Study Measures and Objectives

  • The primary objective of this research study is to:
Assess the feasibility and acceptability of an ice-skating program designed for youth (ages 6 to 11) with intellectual disabilities.
  • The secondary objective is to measure changes related to

    •  perceived physical literacy components
    • well-being
    • self-confidence, and
    • interpersonal skills.

To accomplish this, we will use PLC-Quest, conduct semi-structured interviews with a drawing component, and evaluate the children’s ice-skating skills.

Adapted Exercise Program for Skating

The ice-skating program assessed over the course of this study is a carefully designed adapted physical activity program. The skating classes explicitly accommodate the learning styles of children with ID.

Building Interpersonal Skills

As well as encouraging children to move and explore a new activity, participation in this program is also intended to bolster interpersonal skills for children through interaction with peers in an exciting, safe environment.
