EXERCISE NEUROPHYSIOLOGY LAB

Welcome! Established in 2019, the Exercise Neurophysiology Lab is a research group led by Dr. Jalal Aboodarda in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Please explore our lab website to learn more about our work and feel free to contact us!

What is exercise neurophysiology?

Exercise neurophysiology is a branch of science combining kinesiology, neurobiology, and physiology. We study how central and peripheral neuronal circuits communicate with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and musculoskeletal systems during body movement and exercise, within both basic and applied contexts.

Our research methods

Some methods/tools we use to conduct our research include:

  • Peripheral nerve stimulation
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation
  • Cervicomedullary/transmastoid electrical stimulation
  • Respiratory data collection (e.g., VO2/VCO2)
  • Near-infrared spectroscopy
  • Blood flow occlusion
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry
  • Electroencephalography
  • Treadmill, cycle ergometer, dynamometer
